Minimum G.P.A. of 3.5 on master's coursework and a 3.25 on the last two years of undergraduate coursework .

Competitive Verbal, Quantitative and Analytical Writing GRE scores obtained within 5 years of the date of application (Students from China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, or South Korea will need to submit test scores dated after October 2002. This is due to irregularities in scores from those countries prior to that date. Anyone interested in the reasons behind this policy should read material on the GRE web site or contact WSU Educational Testing Services). As a point of reference, the average GRE scores of successful applicants in the past year were: verbal 547, quantitative 596, and analytical writing 4.74.

For non-native English speakers

  • Paper-based score information: 600
  • Computer-based score minimum: 250
  • Internet-based score minimum: 100

Three letters of recommendation

Although criteria for admission are stringent, they are not rigid. The College of Communication considers all available information before making a decision. In some cases, exceptional credentials in one area may override sub-par credentials in another (e.g., a high G.P.A. from a respected school may compensate for relatively low GRE scores).

Ph.D. Application Deadline

Students are only admitted to the Ph.D. program in the fall semester. The deadline for applications is January 10.  All materials must be received by the deadline for admission the following fall semester.
