Ph.D. Application Process
Submit formal application forms to the WSU Graduate School. These forms are automatically sent to you when you inquire about our graduate program. These forms can also be obtained electronically from the Graduate School web site.
In addition to the Graduate School application form, you should send, or have sent on your behalf, the following:
- A cover letter of no more than 1000 words explaining your academic area of interest and why you feel the Edward R. Murrow College of Communication at Washington State University is a good fit for you. In that letter please discuss the personal, professional and academic factors that have prepared you to pursue a doctoral degree.
- Three references from people who know you well, and who can comment on your academic ability. Please have these individuals send both a letter and the WSU reference form accessed through the Application web page. These letters must be sent directly to the Graduate School.
- One set of official transcripts for each college or university you have attended. These must be sent directly from those institutions to the Graduate School. If you are currently attending Washington State University you do not need to have your transcripts sent.
- Official GRE scores, including verbal, quantitative and analytic writing. These should be sent to the Graduate School. Our department 4705.
- TOEFL scores, for students whose native language is not English. Our minimum TOEFL scores are 600 (paper-based exam); 250 (computer-based exam); 100 (Internet-based exam).
- Supplemental material. Submit any additional material that you feel might enhance your application. Writing samples are particularly encouraged.
Ph.D. Application Deadline
Students are only admitted to the Ph.D. program in the fall semester. The deadline for applications is January 10 for admission the following fall semester.
