The Edward R. Murrow College of Communication

Masters Program

M. A. Admission Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Communication or related field. If your undergraduate degree is not in a related field, certain undergraduate course work may be required.
  • A minimum 3.25 GPA in last two years of undergraduate coursework
  • Competitive Verbal, Quantitative and Analytical Writing GRE scores obtained within 5 years of the date of application (Students from China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, or South Korea will need to submit test scores dated after October 2002. This is due to irregularities in scores from those countries prior to that date. Anyone interested in the reasons behind this policy should read material on the GRE web site or contact WSU Educational Testing Services). As a point of reference, the average GRE scores of successful MA program applicants in the past year were: verbal 514, quantitative 643, and analytical writing 3.75.
  • A minimum TOEFL scores for international students:
    • Paper-based score minimum: 580
    • Computer-based score minimum: 237
    • Internet-based score minimum: 93
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • A 500-word statement of purpose explaining your reasons for pursuing a master's degree, your area(s) of interest, and why the Murrow College graduate program is particularly well-suited to your scholarly goals and objectives.

Although criteria for admission are stringent, they are not rigid. The College of Communication considers all available information before making a decision. In some cases, exceptional credentials in one area may override sub-par credentials in another (e.g., a high G.P.A. from a respected school may compensate for relatively low GRE scores).

M. A. Application Deadlines
Students are admitted to the M. A. program at the start of the fall semester. M. A. applications must be submitted to the Graduate School and to the College of Communication by Jan 10  for Fall admission.
