Washington State University/University of Idaho – Sustainable Communities Collaborative Team
Location: Pullman, WA. and Moscow, ID.
Travel: yes, limited travel to Spokane-Coeur d’Alene (set up and facilitate workshop in March, 2010).
We seek an intern to support our stakeholder outreach efforts. In particular, the student intern will oversee and organize, manage and implement (under the direction of Todd Norton) all aspects associated with a stakeholder workshop to take place in early March, 2010.
The Sustainable Communities Collaborative Research Team consists of several faculty members from WSU and UofI. We work with a wide range of stakeholders including county and city government, scientific associations, environmental and civic organizations. We are engaged in a project which involves interdisciplinary research, stakeholder outreach and capacity building for sustainable development along the Spokane-Coeur d’Alene Corridor.
This internship will oversee:
- Stakeholder recruitment and reminder phone calls to key participants. (key stakeholders have already expressed support of the project. What is needed is recruitment of additional stakeholders and assurance of participation in the workshop).
- Contact with WSU and UofI researchers from a wide array of disciplines (e.g., engineering, natural resource management, and communication) to organize poster sessions at the workshop.
- The writing of draft agendas and schedules as well as revisions leading up to the workshop
- On-site workshop infrastructure needs (room availability, technology needs and support, seating, and so forth)
- Order all food and beverages for the day of the workshop and facilitate payment from WSU/UofI to those vendors
- Record keeping (including electronic copies, informing necessary personnel and printing copies for duplicates) for critical workshop aspects (e.g., meal orders, paid receipts, etc).
- Other tasks as assigned
Student must be enrolled for full-time credit hours
Internship: position is part-time, beginning immediately through April, 30 2010.
Internship hours: 3 credits/160 hours
Internship pay: $10.00/hour

Internship Qualifications and Responsibilities:
DGSS has several internship positions available for students with strong backgrounds in communication, marketing and/or organizational consulting. Qualified interns will participate in promotion, organization and daily operation of DGSS programs and in the performance of projects and activities relating to them, while working with the Director, Associate Director and others at DGSS. Demonstrated skill in Microsoft Word and Powerpoint are required. Specific responsibilities, projects and internship obligations will be negotiated with each successful applicant, must be approved by the sponsoring department/college, and will be memorialized by an Internship Memorandum. Successful internship applicants should expect a wealth of exposure and experience in a wide range of outreach, technical assistance and research activities involving clients and government entities across Washington and the northwest.

DGSS is physically located in the Department of Political Science and Criminal Justice Program in Pullman, but draws upon faculty, staff and students from across the University. DGSS operates several programs, including the Washington State Institute for Criminal Justice (WSICJ), the Western Regional Institute for Community Oriented Public Safety (WRICOPS), and the Natural Resources Leadership Academy (NRLA). DGSS is the home of the Washington Digital Inclusion project, and DGSS is also active in the national and Washington Extension Disaster Education Networks and in emergency planning, preparation and recovery.

Internship Qualifications and Responsibilities:
DGSS has an internship position available for a student with a background in communication and web-site creation and maintenance. DGSS currently hosts or will shortly acquire the hosting and maintenance responsibilities for a number of websites. The qualified intern will be responsible for creating or maintaining website “pages” in compliance with applicable WSU standards, creating or translating and posting content for those websites, and working with the Director, Associate Director and others at DGSS to assure that these websites reflect current information and portray DGSS and its associated entities in the best fashion possible. Familiarity with Dreamweaver, Content Management or equivalent website management software is a prerequisite. Demonstrated skill in Microsoft Word and Powerpoint also required.

U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Forces

Description: The Thirteenth Coast Guard District Office of Auxiliary Forces promotes, trains, funds and recruits 1,000s of citizen volunteers to work side by side with the United States Coast Guard as well as myriad state and local agencies scattered throughout a four state region in the Pacific Northwest.
Congressionally mandated in 1939, the Coast Guard Auxiliary consists of 30,000 members – nearly 2,000 of these civilian heroes live and volunteer in Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana.
An intern in this office will work directly for the Director of Auxiliary Forces who is the direct representative of the region’s Coast Guard Admiral. The Auxiliary is made up of diverse volunteers from all walks of life.
Daily, this office engages with the community on dynamic issues locally, nationally and internationally. The human interest aspect of volunteers saving lives and property makes marketing the Coast Guard Auxiliary truly unique. Fundamental to the success of this position will be the intern’s ability to multi- task projects that will contribute to the students overall goals for the internship as well as continued progress of the Auxiliary program. The projects would vary based on the student’s major and particular interests as there is a variety of work to be done with in the Auxiliary department.

DESCRIPTION: Are you majoring in communication, political science or environmental education and want to gain first-hand, real-world experience working in natural resource management? If so, you may be perfect for the DNR Communications Internship Program.
The person in this internship position has the opportunity to:
- Work with a team of communications professionals in a collaborative environment.
- Write Web copy, articles and press releases;
- Market and expand DNR’s social networking sites (MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Flickr and a blog).
- Assist in training DNR staff to use social media tools;
- Provide experience in crisis communications during the end of fire season.

Year-around Internships in the Northwest

Description: Internships available, quarterly, unpaid, for up to 12 internationally-minded students in the Puget Sound Community.
Interns commit 12-15 hours per week during office business hours, which are 9am-5pm Monday through Friday for 10-12 weeks (3 - 6 months). Interns gain valuable hands on skills and perform basic office tasks plus special projects, which vary depending on the department.
The World Affairs Council creates events and forums for discussion on international issues in the Puget Sound region. The Council is a membership-based, non-partisan organization founded in 1951. It arranges social and professional meetings for more than 1,200 visiting professionals from more than 120 nations. In addition, the Council sponsors more than 80 community programs each year and promotes international education in local classrooms.
In the past, special projects have included accompanying high-level international delegates to their meetings in Seattle, writing grants, and co-creating international curriculum for local schools.
