Overview

Dean Erica Weintraub Austin

Greetings from Dean Austin

It is my honor and pleasure to welcome you to the Edward R. Murrow College of Communication! We take seriously the responsibility of bearing the name of modern journalism’s most illustrious pioneer, who graduated from Washington State College (as WSU was then).

Our alumni continue to further Ed Murrow’s legacy of excellence, courage and innovation. Our annual Murrow Symposium brings highly noted communication professionals and alumni to campus for workshops and a keynote address that help prepare and inspire the next generation of expert communicators.

With approximately 1400 majors and premajors, the Murrow College is a destination major with high standards and excellent placement for the thousands of students who have chosen to pursue communication fields at WSU. We have award-winning research and professional faculty and graduate programs. Several areas of specialty are ranked in the top 2-5 nationally.

A 2007 survey found that industry professionals consistently considered Murrow graduates better than those from other communication and media-related programs in a variety of skills, including creativity, critical thinking, ethics, leadership, professional preparedness, public speaking, technological savvy, work ethic, and writing ability. A survey of alumni contacted in the spring of 2007 found that 92% believed that their association with the Murrow program was influential in their ability to get a job.

These surveys, by the way, were conducted by Murrow students following the School’s tradition of learning by doing and with high standards of professional excellence.

I am delighted you have taken this opportunity to visit one of the most uniquely comprehensive programs of mass and human communication in the country. Please contact us if you would like more information on how to study at, work in or help support the Murrow College.

Best wishes,

Erica Weintraub Austin
