Administrative Structure
Effective Fall 2001
Dean
The Dean’s primary administrative responsibilities center on overall vision and strategic planning, faculty/staff issues, and development. The Dean delegates other responsibilities to the Associate Dean, the Faculty Advisory Board, and the Participating Faculty. The Dean maintains final authority for decision making consistent with University policies.
Associate Dean
Faculty Advisory Board
The Faculty Advisory Board (FAB) performs an advisory function in the College. It is comprised of five faculty members selected by a rotation system to staggered two-year terms, with no member serving more than two consecutive terms. The Associate Deans of Graduate and Undergraduate Students are ex officio members of the FAB. The number of committee positions will increase/decrease as the number of faculty in the College increases/decreases. Responsibilities of the FAB include making recommendations regarding: curriculum development, faculty positions, undergraduate and graduate course proposals, and strategic planning. The Chair of the FAB is selected annually by the committee members.
Assistant Dean of Graduate Studies
The Associate Dean of Graduate Studies oversees graduate curriculum and is responsible for graduate course planning and scheduling, implementing faculty-approved graduate course proposals, TA assignments, oversight of graduate student recruitment, graduate student concerns/complaints, tracking of program graduates, and other duties as assigned by the Dean. The Associate Dean of Graduate Studies is an Ex Officio member of the Faculty Advisory Board. This position provides one course release per semester.
Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Studies
The Associate Dean of Undergraduate Studies implements undergraduate program decisions made by the faculty and Dean. The Associate Dean oversees undergraduate curricula and its responsible for undergraduate course planning and scheduling, undergraduate advising issues, undergraduate concerns/complaints, tracking of graduates of the undergraduate program, implementing faculty-approved undergraduate course proposals and degree programs, undergraduate internships, and other duties as assigned by the Dean. The Associate Dean of Undergraduate Studies is an Ex Officio member of the Faculty Advisory Board. This position provides one course release per semester.
Participating Faculty
Each faculty member participates in one or more Degree Programs relevant to his or her expertise. The Degree Programs include the disciplines reflected in the current University catalog. Each degree program has a Degree Program Coordinator.
Responsibilities of the faculty include maintaining relations with professionals in fields related to the degree programs in which faculty participate, proposing curricular changes, identifying faculty and support needs and advising students. Participating faculty serve on committees for the Dean, Associate Deans, and the College Advisory Committee as necessary.
Selection to the Faculty Advisory Board (FAB)
- All full-time faculty members are eligible to serve on the FAB.
- All who volunteer to participate on the committee shall be placed on a rotation list. The initial list will be randomly-ordered (subject to adjustment via faculty vote). The first and second names on the list will serve one-year terms. The third, fourth, and fifth names on the list will serve two-year terms. All terms after the first year will be two-year terms. Board vacancies shall be filled by the next person on the rotation list.
- An exception to this system shall be implemented if a degree program does not have a participating faculty member serving on the FAB for one year. If this occurs, the next person on the rotation list who participates in that degree program will be placed on the FAB.
Selection of Associate Deans
- Candidates for Associate Dean positions must hold at least Associate Professor or equivalent professional faculty designations. Additionally, candidates for Associate Dean of Graduate Studies must be eligible for graduate faculty status.
- Associate Deans server three-year terms, with a maximum of two consecutive terms. (The Committee suggests efforts be made to stagger the terms of the two Associate Deans.)
- Associate Deans are selected via a traditional search process with the Faculty Advisory Board serving as the search committee.
Responsibilities and Selection of Degree Program Coordinators
- Degree Program coordinators function as informational liaisons and are responsible for calling meetings, seeking feedback, and distributing information among participating faculty in their degree programs.
- Each participating faculty member in a degree program willing to serve as Degree Program Coordinator shall rotate in as coordinator for two-year terms.
